Addy's First Birthday

My how things have changed. When my kids were little, we had grandma and grandpa over for dinner and some cake and ice cream. They opened a few gifts and that was that. Addy's first birthday was October 25 and it was more like a gala event. Grand parents, great grandparents, great-great grandparents, uncles, cousins, aunts, friends...I was impressed.

The party had a ducky theme. Mandy found napkins and she did all those little party things with balloons and streamers, she even made a ducky cake after we found the cutest Wilton cake pan! There were ducky favors and of course food! At least my daughter learned something while catering with her momma all those years.

Addy was at the top of her cute game! Dressed in her little pink dress and white tights, she was a doll. She even sported a button that said "1st Birthday."

Where did this tradition of the "smash" cake come from? I mean, sure, we gave them their cake with their one candle and took lots of pictures of them blowing out the candle and hoping they would take a hand to the cake, but an entire cake to just cover themselves in frosting?! But not my granddaughter. No, she's much more of a lady than that and she wouldn't have anything to do with that whole cake smashing thing. Not until mommy cut her a slice, then she wore it!!!

After a quick bath, it was on to the presents.

Now once again, this child is not one of those rip into the gifts, grab another kind of kids. She likes to take her time. She wants to see what she got, play with it. But we'd have been there for three days if we'd done it at her speed, so her mommy helped things along.

It's so hard to believe that she's already a year old....
